Rev. Fr. Jessie M. Hechanova released an advisory regarding the tightening of security in the university for the safety of the students, employees and visitors. This was due to the explosion that occurred at the Control Shift computer shop located near the SLU main gate on the night of October 2.

On the 3rd week of October, the rehabilitation of the SLU main gate was started as a primary move to the addition of security measures. Some of the reasons behind the developments of the main gate as said by Mr. Francisco Castillo, Special Services Department Head, are for the strict implementation of the use of the ID and checking of bags. Also, it adds to a more organized flow of traffic in and out of the university. Castillo emphasized that the safety and security of the people cannot be improved if the system itself is not enhanced.

Mr. Florante Manaois, head of the SLU Security Committee, confirmed that the modification of the main gate indeed brought about positive results. Within the first week of the second semester, there was already an increase in registered number of students without ID’s. Furthermore, a more organized entrance and exit passages are being observed. Manaois expressed his intention for other gates to follow suit.

owever, in a survey conducted by White & Blue, there were a number of complaints from the students and employees. An employee stated, “The lane for the employees is very narrow for the stout people to pass by.”

Also, Mark from CEA said, “Ang konti nung lanes para sa population tapos ma-traffic pa lalo na kapag pasukan na. Nalalate tuloy ako (There are few lanes for the SLU population; it also causes overcrowding especially during rush hours that students tend to be late).” There are approximately four lanes for the students while the university’s population is about 22, 000. Almost one-third of it enters the main gate.

eeing the positive result of this action, Dean Gil Espiritu of the Student Affairs Office stressed that the obligation to cooperate on strengthening security measures must not only be on the security officers. He articulated his hopes for the students, employees and visitors of the university to cooperate as well.
