To uphold campus press freedom, the highest standards and ethics of journalism and to defend student democratic rights at all levels, the 7th Student Press Congress of the College Editors Guild of the Philippines (CEGP)-Baguio Benguet Chapter held last September 20-21 at Bengao, Bakakeng.

White & Blue, with four other university- and college-based publications (Alternative, Mountain Collegian, Outcrop, Ephphata).

The event aimed to elect a new set of leaders for the next two years. Outgoing CEGP-BB Chairman Anjo Cerdeña officially stepped down as fifth chairman, Marc Arianne Mendiola, a photojournalist of White & Blue, took over.

Mendiola is the second staff from Saint Louis University’s official student publication to be appointed as chairperson, next to Audrey Mary Beltran who headed CEGP-BB in 1998.

He plans to “intensify the campaign for campus press freedom and the membership of school publications.”

Together with Mendiola, Raymond Jaye Sandoval, News Editor of White &Blue, was voted as the Internal Vice Chairman.

University of the Cordilleras’ Adonai Rimando won the External Vice Chairman position. Cielo Bayson and Santiago Tiongco III of Outcrop in the University of the Philippines-Baguio, were appointed as the Secretary General and Deputy Sec.General respectively.

“I expect the Executive Committee to act with unmatched unity to be efficient and to carry forward the [Guild’s] objectives of asserting campus press freedom. They have to be strong in the midst of heavy responsibilities where the only reward is gratitude from the masses that they will serve,” Cerdeña challenged.

Various publications formulated resolutions during the plenary session. Among them were the stand of CEGP about the deprivation of the rights of Indigenous People’s (IP’s) and an initiative to collect an institutional fee to all member publication per year to serve as funding if activities will occur.

Other proposal resolutions are yet to be approved in the future meetings of the Executive Committee.

A mass for peace was held before the congress to commemorate the declaration of Martial Law by former President Ferdinand Marcos
In its aim to enhance the journalism skills of all campus journalist, workshops such as ‘advanced journalism skills training’, online journalism, literary appreciation and criticism, investigative journalism, campus paper management and art as social commentary were held.
