In an effort to accommodate its growing nursing applicants, Saint Louis University is now building a nursing annex on Saint Louis College, a CICM school in La Union. The extension is now in the middle of construction and is expected to start operating in June of 2008.

Dr. Mary Grace Lacanaria, Dean of the College of Nursing in SLU, stated in an interview that it was Saint Louis College who gave the initiative for the Nursing Annex. Nursing enrollees for the next school year, who incidentally are also the first batch to undergo the five-year nursing curriculum, shall have the option to either study at the SLU main campus in Baguio or at the La Union extension in SLC. 200 slots are available for student nurses at the La Union annex. They are divided from the 1500 students to be admitted at the main campus. However, in the event that the slots for the extension had not been exhausted, enrollees who opted to study at the main campus may be forced to fill up the slots. An overflow of La Union annex applicants may also force the applicants to study at the main campus.

Contract

The construction of the Nursing extension was an agreement between  the Saint Louis College and Saint Louis University administrations. “There was no contract... it was only a memorandum of agreement (MOA) which was signed last January 24,” Dr. Lea de Guzman, SLC academic officer, said in an interview. The MOA was signed during SLC’s foundation day by Dr. Mary Grace Lacanaria, Ms. Geraldine Sanil, officer-in-charge of the office of the HR director of SLU, and Engr. Angel Peralta, MIS director of SLU in the presence of administration representatives namely, Rev. Fr. Jessie Hechanova, President, Atty. Arnulfo Soriano, Vice- President for Administration, and Dr. Noel de Leon, Vice-president for Academic Affairs. The contract between SLC and SLU is to be renewed annually. SLU and SLC will collaborate on managing the said annex. SLU will take charge of the academic affairs while SLC will take care of the student services like SPSO (Students’ Personal Services Office, SLC’s equivalent of the SAO), guidance office, security services, library service, and others. SLC’s library – prided to be the Region 1’s first automated library – would have its third floor renovated to accommodate the nursing annex’s needs. The two schools shall also divide the teaching loads for the annex. SLC teachers will teach the general education subjects like Theology, Mathematics and the like while SLU nursing instructors shall teach the professional nursing subjects such as Health Care, Nutrition, and others.

La Union Competition

La Union has quite a number of schools offering nursing courses, most popular of which are Lorma Colleges (LC), Union Christian College (UCC) and La Union College of Nursing, Arts and Sciences (LUCNAS). All of the said schools are offering four-year nursing courses. Lorma, however, is planning to implement a five-year nursing curriculum starting next school year. UCC and LUCNAS, on the other hand, are discrete about their plans. The construction of the SLU nursing annex may bring another competition to the aspiring nurses in Region 1. The La Union Annex is “providing more choices for quality nursing education,” Lacanaria stated. While SLU boasts of its consistent number one rating in the nursing board examinations, Lorma prides itself of having “the longest list of nursing board passers in Region 1.” UCC, on the other hand, brags on having a more concise nursing education than LC.
