Sitting back there watching, you realized that you should have dismissed your previous expectations that it would be another boring display of lines. You noticed yourself sinfully enjoying every scene. You were there gracing the seventy peso ticket and experiencing no dull moments. It was amazing how they revive the classic tale incorporating the modernized flavor but never losing romance and passion. It is Florante at Laura.
Tanghalang SLU dismisses its 9th theater season by reviving Philippine literature’s very own Florante at Laura, a play of romance and passion which is revived of its presentation in a more updated version. Written by Director Dan Riopay, the play retold a romance epic but this time, all spiced up. The coño amusement Florante at Laura has been a stereotypical Filipino classic play presented for educational purposes. Tanghalang SLU promises a rejuvenated approach in formulating the play. “Sir Dan”, as his members call him, trained the 30-membered cast to play light onstage. Throw away the deep tagalong soliloquy and conversation that is: the plays script is a modernized delight of words –taglish- so as to cope with the current generation’s taste of language genre. Freed from language perplexities one would surely enjoy watching the play while writing down facts for the different parts of the reaction paper. To cope up with the modernized effect, the background has the tints of the modern world. One very amazing thing is that, the show will never use the stage’s curtain. How they would shift from every scene - it remains a part to look forward to and be critiqued. Sir Dan’s creativity had lightened up every aspect of the play – enriching every part with solemn strategy. The cast and moreThe play’s normal cast does not stay as it is. The director’s playful mind created fictional humans integrated in the play – never seen before but will be in the play. Who they are - no one knows except for the director himself and the Tanghalang SLU members. Just don’t be surprised if one of kapuso’s telenovela cast appears from out of the blue and stands onstage while you’re watching.
