With the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletics League (BBEAL) competitions concluded after four months of intense combat, the Saint Louis Navigators see their selves clinging on the silver spot. Amidst the pressure of heading the BBEAL competitions, the Navs are still holding their spot as one of the top-ranking schools among six participating institutions, leading the University of the Cordilleras Jaguars and lagging behind the University of Baguio Cardinals. Harvest through the Storm“We are not behind. We are fighting,” SLU sports coordinator Lucy Calagui assured despite SLU having no entry for boxing. “Not joining the boxing competitions would be of great loss to SLU.” Navigators hooked first place in taekwondo (W), archery (M&W), wushu (M), lawn tennis (W), football and baseball; second place in softball (M), swimming (M&W) athletics (M), lawn tennis (M), judo, and taekwondo (M); and third place in softball (W), sepak takraw (M) and athletics (W). Amidst the TorrentDespite of missing the golden cup, Calagui praised the Navs saying, “They improved compared last year, inspite of the school’s recruitment policy life free housing.” SLU athletes are of pure skills and brains. Rigid training, determination and hardwork are enough for the Navs to attain high ranks on different sports events. Moreover, Calagui said that even though athletes are only required 50% of their total academic load in order to play in the BBEAL, the Navs are encouraged to pass 70% of their total academic and some even pass 100%. “They do not beg for grades and we do not go as far as the remote places to recruit players.”, she added. She also thanked the SLU administration for being open. Athletes receive proportional allowances with 265 pesos each per game and 445 pesos if they reached the championship rounds and another 445 pesos if they obtained the champion’s mark. “So far, I’m happy with second place.”, said Calagui. “Sa atin, it is for participation (For us, it is for participation).”
Setting New GoalsAs plans in preparation for the next competitions, Calagui stated that coaches must make some revisions on some programs, and if there are any weaknesses, they have to strengthen them. The University of the Philippines Baguio will host next year’s BBEAL.
