Saint Louis University Navigators Archery Team’s arrows flew the right paths to pave the way for the archers to conquer the Baguio-Benguet Educational Athletic Association (BBEAL) archery competition last February 2-3 at the University of the Philippines- Baguio (UP-B) gymnasium.

The team was composed of Allen Helyzer Soliba, Frederick Martin Jr., Alfred Rolfe Soliba, Lenon Jake Baybay and Giovanni Ola for the men’s division; Kristine Vic Victor, Christel Kimberly Cantillas, Czerrina Mae Olivas, Carla Gregorio, Beberly Amiling and Remedios Juganas for the women’s division. Their eagle-eyed abilities enabled them to reap an unprecedented haul of 12 golds, four silvers and four bronzes.

Right on target

Victor, living up to her name, initiated the Navs’ medal-mining by ruling the women’s 30-meters. Cantillas grabbed bronze on the same event. University of the Cordillera’s Jonalyn Amiling nabbed silver. Allen Soliba and Martin grabbed second and third place respectively in the 30-meters men’s division, making UC Jaguars’ Joshua Mangomoc hit the champion’s mark. Distance is not a threat as Victor continued to pierce through opposition as the Nav reaped gold in the women’s 25-meters; Cantillas, silver and Jaguars’ Japhet Batallang, bronze. Pressing on against tough cocontenders, Allen Soliba attained bronze in the men’s 25-meters, with Mangomoc and UP-B Fighting Maroons’ Jeero Cueto for the gold and silver spots respectively. Accurate aims and hits ensured the Navs top ranks on the overall team ranking. Victor acquired gold and Cantillas earned silver for the women’s division while Allen Soliba reaped bronze for the men’s division. SLU outranked UC and UP-B by 66 and 153 points respectively in the team ranking for women and landed second to UC by 54 points in the men’s division.

The competition flared up as the Olympic rounds raged through on the second day of the competition. After four nerve-breaking rounds, Czerrina Mae Olivas dumped Jaguars’ Elizabeth Sokoken with a 22 point lead. From 15 contenders, Victor and Cantillas battled for the top rank, ultimately ending the bout with a tie breaking shoot-off leaving Cantillas the victor by a 3-point lead. Allen Soliba, however missed four points to nab the bronze from Jaguars’ Benjamin Mundiguing, making him land on the fourth spot on the men’s Olympic rounds. Aside from the individual category, the Nav archers proved to excel as a team as they place among the top spots on the Olympic round team category. SLU topped the ranks with 175 points in the women’s division and 198 points in the men’s division. Jaguars fell behind by 30 points, women and 17 points, men. The Fighting Maroons snitched third place 146 points and 137 points for the women’s and men’s division respectively
