The Beijing Olympics had just ended a few months ago and it’s a sad fact that our Philippine Team did not won even a single bronze medal.
However, we can not deny the fact that they had given their all in their respective events making them, still, a hero in their fellow Filipino’s eyes. In life, we encounter events that would test not just our physical abilities but also our psychological well-being. We people, especially the Filipinos, tend to bow down to these obstacles we encounter and let it control our lives without even trying to somehow fight back. In case you haven’t noticed, many of us unconsciously let our problems get in our daily routine by worrying too much on how to do this or do that. We seem to forget that we were not made to merely worry and think of our problems. I learned about that just about now, because like you, I worry about projects, examination results, grades, assignments, deadlines and all the things that make our college lives ‘miserable’. An instructor told our class that “You shouldn’t always look at the ‘dark’ side; you should learn to flip the coin and see that it’s not that bad after all”. Now, I can clearly see that no one is to be blamed for our shortcomings but our own selves. We tend to give judgments on how heavy burdens are by merely looking at it and until we bother to lift it up that we realize how light it is. Funny that I remembered this cliché- “Don’t judge the book by its cover”- but how can we not judge the book by its cover if it’s the cover that we see from the very beginning? Well, this “judge the book” thingy is like the requirements our instructors give us. A book gets better and better when we try to read further and until we finish it will we only see the beauty and essence of that book. The same principle applies to these requirements. We may not see how it will help our totality grow as we start to do it but as we go along and dig deeper into it, we will learn that it is for our betterment. We will then realize that our instructors, really, know what is best for us and that they do not give these requirements to merely ‘torture’ us but to open our eyes that our lives won’t be that easy in the real world. We need to see and understand that the rationale of these requirements will redound to us in the near future. We may still have a long way to go but I believe that we need to enjoy and cherish each moment we will devour in making these requirements because these moments may not come again. I also do believe that we need to thank our instructors for giving these requirements; there will be no essence of us going to school to learn and to be educated if we do not do anything else but to sit and listen all day long. We learn through these requirements because we learn and realize things when we do it on our own and experience how to do it. We were made to over power these obstacles so that when our children or our children’s children ask us what we learned in our lives, we will have something to say that is worth remembering. “Life does not get easier as we grow older, it becomes more and more complicated and we do not need to always win. Life is not always about winning, it is how we fought back and how long we stood up against these obstacles that matters. We do not need to always win to prove that we are good; sometimes it is in losing that we learn how it feels to really win. It is in losing that we feel and learn to get back in the race and to do better the next time we try again and in fighting back that we feel strong and confident that we had done something great for ourselves.” *** Credits: I did not have the chance to thank the following at the previous column so I say THANK YOU: to all the instructors I had and I have, you contributed much to my well being; to my best buddies-joena and ola, you are part of the persons I call a family; to the best gayfriend I ever had Charles de los Santos, you may have gone with the Ultimate One for almost six years now but the ideals you left are forever treasured; and to the Ultimate One, for the continuing guidance He had given…sa lahat lahat po ng mga kakilala ko MARAMING SALAMAT!
